Standard Level (SL) requires 150 teaching hours and includes three assessment components: Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Individual Oral. Higher Level (HL) requires 240 teaching hours and adds a fourth component: the HL Essay, a 1,200–1,500 word coursework assignment. The difficulty jump is rated moderate (3.33/5), with HL demanding deeper analysis and more extensive writing.

The assessment consists of external exams and internal components. Paper 1 involves analyzing unseen non-literary texts, while Paper 2 is a comparative essay on two literary works. The Individual Oral (IO) connects a literary work and a non-literary body of work to a global issue. HL students also complete the HL Essay.

Do not just summarize the text; focus on analyzing how meaning is created through language, style, and rhetorical devices. Use technical terminology accurately (e.g., tone, syntax) and support every point with specific textual evidence. Always spend a few minutes planning your response before writing to ensure a coherent argument.

Start by selecting a strong global issue that links both your chosen literary and non-literary works. Ensure you balance your analysis so both works receive equal attention. Avoid reading from a script; instead, use notes for reference to maintain eye contact and speak confidently within the time limit.

Our tutors are top-scoring IB graduates who have received a 7 in English Lang & Lit. They help you master the "cryptic" markschemes, refine your essay structure, and provide targeted feedback on your writing style. Whether you need help with the IO, HL Essay, or exam technique, they provide insider strategies you won't find online.

The free consultation is a 20–30 minute session with a Student Success Expert.
