IB Exam Retakes

Are you retaking an IB exam? While this is not something done by everyone, it is more common than you think! We understand that retaking IB exams is very stressful, regardless of the reason why. For this reason we are breaking down everything you need to know about IB exam retakes.

What are IB exam retakes?

The IBDP is much more than an academic programme. This is important to remember!

If you did not achieve the results you were hoping for, you can retake IB exams in future examination sessions. You can retake exams for one or several subjects, and there is no limit to how many times you can do it! If needed, it’s also possible to redo other core elements such as the Extended Essay or CAS.

Things to consider when deciding to retake IB exams

First, you need to decide when you want to do your retakes. Retakes don’t need to be in the session following your original session. So, for example, if you originally took an exam in the May 2025 session, you don’t have to do your retakes in the November 2025 session. However, it is important to consider your university plans and the fact that not all subjects may be offered in all sessions. Also, keep in mind that the syllabus might change between sessions. There is not one right way to decide when to do your retakes. Do what feels right for you! If you are unsure, a parent, teacher or tutor can give you some advice.

You also need to decide where you will do your IB exam retakes. Note that not all schools accept retake candidates. Talk to the IB coordinator at the school where you want to retake your exams to see if retaking exams at the school is a possibility!

Want to retake your IA? You can resubmit an IA, however, it cannot be retaken alone. You can only redo your IA if you are also resitting papers. The deadlines for retaken IAs are earlier, with Language A HL essays, EE, TOK and Group 6 early components due on 15th September. All other IAs have to be submitted by 20th October, however these deadlines may be earlier depending on the school.

Make a plan!

Once you have decided when and where your retake exam will take place, you need to start preparing. First, you should make a revision plan. Decide which topics you will start with and which ones you’ll leave for later. A good idea could be to start with the topics you find most difficult, so you have plenty of time to review them. Another approach is to begin with the topics that are needed to understand later ones.

For many sciences, the first couple of topics build the foundation for the rest, so it makes sense to start there. It’s important not to rush, take your time and make sure you really understand the content. Now is also a good time to start working on essay writing if you are retaking exams for an essay-based subject.

Learn from your mistakes

We understand that retakes can be nerve wracking but try to think about it this way. If you are sitting a retake exam you have a huge advantage, you’ve already done this before! Even if you did not achieve the marks you were hoping for, you know what to expect. Take advantage of this. Take a moment to reflect about the last time you took the exams.

  • What went wrong?
  • Was it just nerves or were you lacking important knowledge?
  • How could you have been more prepared going into the exam?
  • And most importantly: How can you learn from your mistakes?

Use those insights to level up your prep and walk into your retakes with more confidence.

The days leading up to a retake

If you are taking retake exams you already know that IB exams are an extremely stressful period, but it is still important to remember to take care of yourself. Make sure you eat, drink, and get enough sleep. No one does their best when they’re exhausted! To minimize stress, try to avoid cramming all the information in the days before if you can. To feel fully confident you should start to prepare for retakes months before the exams.

IB exam retakes allow students who didn't achieve their desired results to re-sit exams in future examination sessions. This applies to one or several subjects, and there's no limit to how many times you can retake. You can also redo core elements like the Extended Essay or CAS if needed.

The timing of your retake depends on your university application deadlines and subject availability in different examination sessions. You don't have to retake in the very next session. It's crucial to consider if the syllabus might change and what timeline allows you to prepare thoroughly. A Lanterna Student Success Expert can help you map out the best strategy.

Yes, you can resubmit an IA or EE, but generally, you can only do so if you are also re-sitting the corresponding exam papers. There are specific, earlier deadlines for retaken IAs and EEs (e.g., September 15th for Language A HL essays, EE, TOK, and Group 6 early components; October 20th for other IAs), so it's crucial to check with your school or the IB coordinator.

Not all schools accept retake candidates, so you'll need to speak with the IB coordinator at your preferred school to confirm. If your own school isn't an option, Lanterna offers a dedicated exam centre where you can take your IB retake exams, providing a convenient and supportive environment.

Start by making a detailed revision plan. Reflect on your previous attempt to identify what went wrong (e.g., nerves, knowledge gaps, time management) and how you can improve.
