- Effectively Support Your Child: Discover practical strategies to foster your child's growth, independence, and success.
Part 1: The MYP Philosophy Unpacked
The MYP is a globally recognized framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. It's less about memorizing facts and more about learning how to learn. At its core are two key components: the IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills.
The IB Learner Profile
These 10 attributes are the DNA of any IB student. They are actively nurtured in every class to shape well-rounded, responsible individuals:
- Inquirers
- Knowledgeable
- Thinkers
- Communicators
- Principled
- Open-minded
- Caring
- Risk-takers
- Balanced
- Reflective
Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills
The MYP explicitly teaches transferable skills that are crucial for academic success and life beyond school. These are the tools students will use in the DP and at university:
- Thinking Skills: Critical, creative, and ethical thinking.
- Communication Skills: Oral, written, and non-verbal.
- Social Skills: Collaboration and teamwork.
- Self-management Skills: Organization and time management.
- Research Skills: Information and media literacy.
Part 2: The MYP in Action
Beyond philosophy, the MYP uses specific structures to make learning relevant and challenging. These are the experiences that set the MYP apart.
Connecting Knowledge to the Real World
Learning is framed by six Global Contexts (e.g., Scientific and Technical Innovation, Globalization and Sustainability) to help students see the relevance of their studies. Furthermore, Interdisciplinary Units require students to combine knowledge from two or more subjects to solve a complex problem—just like in the real world.
The Personal Project: A Capstone Experience
In the final year, every student completes the Personal Project. This is a self-directed inquiry into a topic of their choice, culminating in a product and a report. It's the perfect training ground for the DP's Extended Essay, teaching vital research, planning, and long-term project management skills.
Part 3: The Curriculum & Assessment
The MYP ensures a broad and balanced education through eight subject groups, providing a strong academic foundation. In the final two years, students can focus on six subjects to align with their future goals.
| The Eight MYP Subject Groups | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Language and Literature | Language Acquisition | Individuals and Societies | Sciences |
| Mathematics | Arts | Physical and Health Education | Design |
How is Student Work Assessed?
This is one of the biggest shifts for parents. The MYP uses criterion-related assessment. Instead of being ranked against other students, your child is measured against a consistent set of standards for what they are expected to know and be able to do.
- Each subject has four criteria (A, B, C, D).
- Students receive a score from 1-8 for each criterion.
- These scores are combined to give a final subject grade from 1-7.
Part 4: The MYP to DP Transition Plan
The MYP is the ideal preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. It doesn't make the DP "easy," but it makes the challenges familiar. Here’s how the MYP builds the "academic muscles" needed for DP success:
| MYP Skill Developed | Directly Prepares For... |
|---|---|
| The Personal Project | The 4,000-word Extended Essay (EE). |
| Criterion-based Assessment | Understanding DP markschemes and how to earn every point. |
| Interdisciplinary Thinking & Global Contexts | The critical thinking required for Theory of Knowledge (TOK). |
| Service as Action | The Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) component. |
| Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills | The independent study and time management needed to handle the DP workload. |
Part 5: A Parent's Toolkit for the MYP Journey
Your support is invaluable. Here are some practical ways to help your child thrive during the MYP years:
- Speak the Language: Familiarize yourself with the Learner Profile and ATL skills. Ask questions like, "How were you a risk-taker in class today?" or "What organizational skills did you use for that project?"
- Focus on Feedback, Not Just Scores: When you look at a report, discuss the comments on each criterion. Help your child understand the specific feedback for improvement rather than just the final 1-7 grade.
- Encourage Curiosity: Foster an environment where questions are celebrated. The MYP is all about inquiry, so support your child's deep dives into topics that fascinate them, both in and out of school.
- Promote Balance: The "Balanced" learner profile attribute is key. Help your child manage their time between academics, extracurriculars, social life, and rest. This is a crucial skill for the demanding DP years.

Why Lanterna?
The MYP is a rigorous, five-year educational framework for students aged 11-16, bridging primary and diploma programmes. It focuses on holistic development, interdisciplinary learning, and making real-world connections, fostering critical thinkers and internationally-minded individuals.
The MYP uses criterion-related assessment, evaluating students against specific learning standards rather than comparing them to peers. Each subject has four criteria (A, B, C, D) scored 1-8, where 4 indicates satisfactory understanding, promoting personal growth and mastery of objectives.
The MYP builds essential "academic muscles" for the DP, including critical thinking, research skills (via the Personal Project), time management, and understanding criterion-based assessment. Its focus on the Learner Profile and ATL skills directly prepares students for DP components like the Extended Essay, CAS, and TOK.
The Personal Project is a self-directed, extended inquiry undertaken by students in their final MYP year. It allows them to explore a topic of personal interest, apply ATL skills, and create a unique product or outcome, culminating in a report. It's a vital precursor to the DP's Extended Essay.
Parents can support by understanding the IB Learner Profile and ATL skills, encouraging inquiry, providing emotional support for the Personal Project (without doing it for them), embracing criterion-related assessment feedback, promoting balance, and maintaining open communication with the school.
The Lanterna IB consultation is a free, 20-30 minute session with one of our Student Success Experts. It's specifically designed for parents and students navigating the IB, including those in the MYP, to discuss their academic journey, identify challenges, and outline a clear path forward, without any obligation.
Our Student Success Experts are experienced educators and former IB graduates who understand the nuances of the MYP and its transition to the DP. They provide personalized guidance, help identify learning gaps, offer strategies for MYP success, and can advise on how Lanterna’s tutors can support your child's specific needs.
While our primary focus is often the Diploma Programme, Lanterna's expert tutors, many of whom are IB 7-graduates, can certainly provide targeted support for MYP students. This can include strengthening foundational skills, preparing for specific MYP assessments, or guiding them through the Personal Project, ensuring a smooth transition to the DP.
Lanterna's tutors and Student Success Experts specialize in this transition. We help students bridge the gap by reinforcing MYP skills vital for DP success, such as research, critical thinking, and extended writing. We can also provide early guidance on subject choices and expectations for DP components like the Extended Essay and CAS.
Absolutely not. Our free IB consultation is a no-obligation opportunity for you to gain clarity, receive expert advice, and develop a personalized plan for your child's IB journey. We believe in empowering families with information first, and you are welcome to decide your next steps at your own pace.
