All IB exams are challenging, intricate, and require planning and preparation, particularly those in a foreign language. Here’s a guide to help you prepare for and deliver the perfect IB French B oral exam.
1. Review Global Themes and Vocabulary
Before the day of the exam, make sure to brush up on your vocabulary and opinions of the global themes that you discussed in class during your time in IB French. Try to have a handful of key phrases that could relate any image you are presented with to the global themes.
2. Master Descriptive Vocabulary for Image Analysis
Next, you’ll want to make sure you have proficient vocabulary to describe an image you are presented with. Learn phrases that will help you point out different parts of the image (En premier plan, En milieu plan, En arrière plan, En haut, En bas, À gauche, À droite). Also ensure you are able to describe attributes of people in the image as well as what they are doing; this will require extensive knowledge of vocabulary and verb usage.
3. Showcase Your Grammatical Mastery
Another way to help you achieve a top grade in your oral exam is to demonstrate a variety of grammatical tenses (past tenses, present, future, conditional, subjunctive). Prepare yourself by learning and reviewing a few phrases that set up the use of a particular tense, i.e. for subjunctive you could use: il est essentiel que… , je doute que… . If you show your ability to aptly use a variety of tenses you will impress your examiner and boost your grade.
4. Employ a Three-Layered Analytical Approach
Additionally, the levels of analysis you undertake during your oral exam will have a direct impact on the grade you receive. In practicing your orals, you should adopt a 3-layered structure of analysis:
- Layer 1: explain what’s happening in the image
- Layer 2: explain how it relates to the global theme
- Layer 3: discuss the importance of the global theme and add a personal opinion.
All throughout, you should be demonstrating your skilled vocabulary and grammatical use.
Final tips for success:
- Practice past papers: familiarise yourself with question types and time constraints.
- Read and listen to French daily: Immerse yourself in podcasts, articles, and videos to improve comprehension.
- Expand your vocabulary: Keep a list of relevant vocabulary and review it regularly.
- Speak French as much as possible: Even if you make mistakes, practicing orally will help you gain confidence.
By following these guidelines and actively engaging with the language, you can excel and achieve a top grade in the IB French B oral exam.
Bonne chance!

Why Lanterna?
The IB French B Oral exam assesses your ability to communicate effectively in French. It involves analyzing a visual stimulus (like a photograph) and engaging in a conversation related to global themes. Success requires strong vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and analytical skills.
Vocabulary is absolutely crucial. You need a rich descriptive vocabulary to analyze the image thoroughly, as well as specific terms related to global themes. Expanding your lexicon allows you to express nuanced ideas and impress the examiner, moving beyond basic descriptions to sophisticated analysis.
To showcase grammatical mastery, focus on using a variety of tenses beyond the present, such as past tenses (passé composé, imparfait), future, conditional, and especially the subjunctive. Practicing phrases that naturally introduce these tenses (e.g., "il est essentiel que..." for subjunctive) will help you integrate them smoothly and demonstrate advanced proficiency.
This approach helps structure your analysis for maximum impact. Layer 1 involves describing what's happening in the image. Layer 2 connects the image to relevant global themes. Layer 3 delves deeper by discussing the importance of the global theme and offering a personal opinion or reflection. This structured method ensures comprehensive analysis and demonstrates critical thinking.
Consistent practice is key. Immerse yourself by reading and listening to French daily (podcasts, articles, videos). Actively expand your vocabulary, especially descriptive terms and phrases for global themes. Most importantly, speak French as much as possible, even if you make mistakes, to build confidence and fluency. Practicing with past papers and mock orals is also highly beneficial.
